VALLABH VIDYANAGAR – EVOLUTION AND DEVELOPMENT The
story of Vallabh Vidyanagar, The University Township that grew in
wilderness, is stranger than fiction. No one, who goes round the
campus scanning its beautiful landscapes today, will be ready to believe
that only around five decades ago it was a wasteland lost in crime,
squalor and darkness. But a near miracle happened when the late Shri
Bhaikaka with a band of devoted, fellow-workers including the late Shri
Bhikhabhai Patel set out to turn their dreams of rural regeneration into
reality. Thanks to the inspiration of the late Sardar Vallabhbhai
Patel to whose memory this seat of learning stands as a magnificent
monument, within an incredibly short time of only seven years the nucleus
of education here flowered in a university. Vallabh
Vidyanagar today (with a population of around 35,000) is a unique
educational township, built and developed as a Center for Higher Education
in rural surroundings. It is about 2 Kms. from Karamsad, the
hometown of Late Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and 5 Kms. from Anand, the
Milk City of India, which is on Baroda-Ahmedabad Railway line in the heart
of Anand district of Gujarat. The township became functional in June 1947
and the University Started functioning in 1956. THE
BIRTH OF A.P.I.E.D. The
Arvindbhai Patel Institute of Environmental Design (A.P.I.E.D.) was first
founded in 1980 at Vadodara by a group of like-minded people who had a
collective goal of creating an institute of great repute imparting quality
education for the disciplines of Architecture and Interior Design. For
this purpose they founded a Trust known as “PARISAR TRUST”.
The group of founder trustees included renowned Architects – Late
Shri Suryakant Patel and Shri Rasik Shah, Civil Engineers – Shri
Mahendra Modi and Shri Prabhudas Patel and a renowned Painter – Shri
Bhupendra Khakhar better known as Shri Bhupen Khakhar. These were joined
by Late Shri Manubhai D Patel and Shri Himatbhai J. Patel, Shri Rahul
Patel and Smt. Kavitaben Patel. The
institute was shifted and established at Vallabh Vidyanagar on 1st August
1984 under the patronage of Late Dr. H.M. Patel who was the Finance
Minister of India and Chairman, Charutar Vidya Mandal. The Institute is a
constituent of Charutar Vidya Mandal, Vallabh Vidyanagar. The
campus is placed in the serene and congenial educational environment of
Vallabh Vidyanagar. It was
designed by its mentor - Late Shri Suryakant Patel himself. The college
campus is very much an extension of nature, spanned with open courtyards
and natural landscapes, which is very conducive to creative learning such
as the disciplines of Architecture and Interior Design. It is just the
kind of place that stimulates imagination. The
building is equipped with all kinds of facilities like Studios, Workshops,
Exhibition areas, Auditorium, Audio-Visual room, general activity spaces
for formal and informal activities, Laboratories for various purposes such
as Photography, Computers, Climatology and Structures, Material Museum,
Library and a Canteen which are updated regularly from time to time.
